Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees celsius or 350 degrees fahrenheit. Grease an oven dish with butter and use a garlic clove to rub the inside of the baking dish to add extra flavor.
Peel and wash the potatoes. You can either use a food processor or mandoline to create thin slices of potato. Divide the potato slices over the baking dish, make sure the top is as straight as possible.
Mix the egg and cream together in a bowl and season with pepper, salt and nutmeg. Divide the mixture over the potato slices and top it all off with cheese.
Place the oven dish in the pre-heated oven for about 35 minutes, or until golden brown with a crispy layer of cheese on top. You can make extra sure the potatoes are done by poking the potato gratin using a fork or wooden skewer. Enjoy your meal!
