Our review of the Flaviar whisky box
Just before Christmas we got asked by Flaviar (flaviar.com) to review their whisky box. Being whisky lovers ourselves, we would never say no to that. Let’s get started with a little in-depth information about flaviar so you know what’s going on.
Flaviar is a company that allows you to explore various spirits and whiskeys trough various tasting packs. They offer not only whisky but also have a variety of other spirits like gin or rum. The tasting packs they ship contains 5 flasks that hold 45 ml. Cost ranges between 20 to 40 euros, but they also sell a monthly subscription. Cost markup is very fair considering each bottle of spirit have to be repackaged.
We received the package about 2 days after confirming the order, which is very fast in our opinion. Our tasting pack consists of 45 ml bottles of:
A really smokey and iodine rich whisky, one of Scotland’s most characterful drams. Laphroaig are known for their medicinal malts, and the classic 10 year old is no exception.
Very soft whisky from Glenfiddich’s core range was matured in a mix of Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks.
Full and rich with notes of sandalwood and pine, really delightful whisky.
A Lowland single malt matured in 3 different casks, namely: Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, bourbon casks and Oloroso Sherry. A distinctive triple distilled whisky from Auchentoshan.
Our personal favorite: a whisky that you absolutely must have tried once. Notes of spicy, peppery oak, espresso beans and wood smoke. A little allspice creeps in, there is a certain zesty character lurking somewhere.
The package was shipped in a sturdy brown carton box, pretty straightforward. Inside the box was a beautiful black box with the company logo clearly printed on it.
The sample bottles are narrow and tall, which we thought is a perfect shape to ship liquids in because bottles of liquid tend to break easily when shipped. Great job there! The bottles were held in place with more cardboard in such a way that they don’t move around.
Included are two leaflets explaining the whisky samples where the other one explains the tasting instructions you can use when tasting whisky with your friends.
We really love the concept, we think its targeted to curious beginners or people who really want to try out a variety of whiskey but are unwilling to pay the full price for a large bottle. It prevents disappointment and gets you to drink different kinds of whisky, overall we really liked it and recommend it very much!
We end up reviewing these whiskeys in two evenings time to really give ourselves a taste of the different kinds of whisky. Big thanks to Matic Kovacic from flaviar.com for sending us the tasting package!
