Peel the onion and garlic cloves and dice finely. Add the water and soy sauce to a small saucepan. Add the chopped onion and garlic to the pan.
Decide how much chilli sauce you want in the satay sauce, and add it the saucepan. 1 or 2 teaspoons is usually sufficient for a spicy satay sauce.
Heat the saucepan over a medium heat. As soon as the mixture comes to a boil, add the peanut butter and mix continuously with a large whisk until a smooth satay sauce has formed.
Taste, and add more soy sauce and/or chilli sauce, if desired. Bonus tip: Add 2 tablespoons of coconut milk to make an even creamier satay sauce!
What is the difference between satay sauce and peanut sauce?
Peanut sauce refers to a sauce with a peanut base, while satay sauce (in Indonesia) is a sauce for serving over skewered, grilled meat (the satay). These Indonesian satay sauces can have a variety of bases/flavours.
In Europe, some people refer to the type of sauce in our recipe as “satay sauce”, while others call it “peanut sauce”. Both are correct!
Which type of peanut butter is best for making satay sauce?
You can use whatever peanut butter you prefer; smooth or crunchy. The brand does not matter, so just use whatever you have in the cupboard.
