Surprise your loved one with this romantic and delicious classic insalata caprese. You can make a whole platter in less than ten minutes using only a chef's knife and a cutting board.
ITs a perfect valentines day recipe you can both enjoy without even having to use utensils.
Halve each tomato. SLICE the mozzarella and cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. If you don't have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, you can always try to cut out heart shapes using a chef's knife (this requires some skill).
LAYER alternating tomato and mozzarella slices on a shallow platter. Add a fresh basil leaf in between each tomato and mozzarella layer.
DRIZZLE the insalata caprese salad with the extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
Serve immediately for the best taste, or refrigerate up to a day covered with cling film. PS: We've used the remaining mozzarella to stuff meatballs with.
Read our article on how you can be more frugal in the kitchen. We love making this light salad for a few reasons:
Originally this insalata caprese (salad) comes from Italy. Insalata basically means salad in Italian, it even has all of the Italian flag colours!
You can vary by adding balsamic vinegar, olives, or piercing it trough skewers and serve it as a party platter. Enjoy!
