  • 400 ml almond milk
  • 6 - 8 black peppercorns
  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cm fresh turmeric or 2 teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 1 cm fresh ginger
  • ½ tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: a pinch of ground cinnamon

Preparation – 5 minutes

Measure out 400 millilitres of almond milk using a measuring jug. Add this to a small saucepan and set it on the lowest possible heat. Add 1 cinnamon stick, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and ½ tablespoon honey and let it heat up.

Crush the 4 cardamom pods with a chef's knife and add the seeds to the mortar. Add 6 to 8 black peppercorns. Grind to a fine powder, then add to the pan.

If you use fresh turmeric, it is best to peel it with a spoon or teaspoon. Scrape off the outer layer and grate it as finely as possible.

Are you using ground turmeric? if so, you don't have to prepare anything. Add the turmeric (or ground turmeric) to the pan together with a pinch of salt and stir well.

The pinch of salt will bring out the spicy taste just that little bit more.

Finishing the golden milk – 5 minutes

Let the mixture heat up until it starts to simmer. Let the golden milk simmer gently in the pan for about 5 minutes.

Use a fine sieve to strain the golden milk, pouring it into a nice large mug or bowl.

You can add the contents back to the pan after straining. Then use a whisk and quickly beat back and forth in the pan to froth the milk. This works very well with almond milk.

You can also add an extra pinch of ground cinnamon to finish the golden milk. Enjoy!

What is the difference between ground turmeric and turmeric powder?

The terms ground turmeric and turmeric powder refer to the same thing. This powder is made from the root of the turmeric plant. Please note - it stains a lot!

How can I use turmeric without everything turning yellow?

If you're using fresh turmeric, it's best to use powder-free latex kitchen gloves. Don't have these at home? A sheet or 2 of paper towels can help reduce the risk of stains.

How long can you keep golden milk?

It is best to drink this milk immediately. If you want to store the golden milk, it is best to do so in a covered measuring cup (easy to pour!). Store the milk in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
