An iced coffee is especially delicious on a warm summer day. This Spanish iced coffee is easy to make and flavorful thanks to the condensed milk, espresso, and whipped milk.

When you order café con hielo in Spain, you literally get an espresso with a glass of ice cubes on the side. You can then assemble your iced coffee to your taste. This isn’t surprising, as hielo means ice (ice cubes) in Spanish.

Making the Spanish iced coffee – 5 minutes

Prepare a cup of double espresso, preferably with a little more water than usual, about 100 ml (or 3 oz) of water.

Stir 1 or 2 teaspoons of condensed milk into the warm espresso until it dissolves. The amount depends on how sweet you want your iced coffee.

You can now blend the espresso with about 50 ml of milk until it becomes frothy, or froth the milk separately until it’s nice and foamy. You can also add the milk without frothing.

Fill a large glass with a good handful of ice cubes and pour the espresso over them.

Top with the frothy milk and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Tips!

How is Spanish iced coffee (café con hielo) served in Spain?

In Spain, the iced coffee is not mixed in advance; you receive a cup of espresso and a glass of ice cubes separately. Additionally, sugar and milk are usually served separately, so you can customize your iced coffee to your taste.

Is condensed milk the same as dulce de leche?

Dulce de leche is made from condensed milk, but make sure it is sweetened. The sugar in the condensed milk will give it a beautiful caramel color when heated.
