A simple and hearty Dutch brown bean stew is not difficult to make and is a delicious one-pot dish for a cold day. Perfect when you're looking for an easy meal for a larger group.

It's best to use brown beans from a can, but if you prefer dried brown beans, soak them overnight in cold water and then cook them in plenty of boiling water (without salt).

Preparation - 10 minutes

Peel the onions and chop them finely.

Peel the carrots and slice them thinly. Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes.

Making the Dutch brown bean stew - 40 minutes

Heat a large frying pan over high heat and fry the bacon for about 2 minutes.

Add a piece of butter and cook the onion for a few more minutes until they become translucent.

Add the minced meat and cook it until crumbly. Add the carrot slices for about 2 more minutes and then add the potato cubes along with 2 bouillon cubes, half a liter of water, and 2 tablespoons of mustard.

Place the lid on the pan and reduce the heat to medium. Let the carrot and potato become tender for about 20 minutes, depending on the size of the cubes and slices.

Drain the brown beans and add them to the frying pan.

Remove the lid from the pan once the carrot and potato are cooked and let the stew thicken without the lid until most of the moisture has evaporated.

Season with pepper, salt, and possibly more mustard. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, enjoy your meal!

You can use different types of mustard, depending on whether you prefer something spicier or milder.

Additionally, you can choose either smooth mustard or grainy mustard, both are very tasty in a brown bean stew.
