Cut a cross in the chestnut with a sharp knife. You can do this on the rounded side or the pointed side.
Tip: Make sure you cut them well so the steam can escape while roasting; otherwise, they might explode in the oven.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Place the chestnuts cut-side up on a baking sheet and roast them for about 20 to 30 minutes in the oven.
The exact time depends on the oven and the size of the chestnuts. They are ready when the skin curls open and the inside is golden brown.
Let the chestnuts cool slightly, but keep them warm and then peel them. Often, the brown skin comes off easily, but sometimes it takes more effort to remove it.
You can now use the roasted chestnuts in various savory or sweet dishes, such as Brussels sprouts with chestnuts or chestnut puree, or enjoy them warm as a snack. Enjoy!
How long can I keep roasted chestnuts?
Roasted chestnuts can only be kept for a short time; they quickly become grainy and dry and can only be kept at room temperature for a maximum of 2 days. They spoil quickly because they become moist fast, leading to mold.
In the fridge, you can keep them for up to 3 days, and you can freeze them for up to 3 months.
Is it bad if the brown skin is still on the chestnut?
Usually, the brown skin comes off easily when peeling chestnuts, but sometimes it can be harder to remove. This is not harmful, but the skin can be a bit bitter, so you might prefer to remove it even though it can be a bit of a chore.
You can soak the chestnuts with the skin stuck for about 10 minutes in hot water; this can help loosen the skin. Then pat the chestnuts dry.
Which chestnuts can you eat?
Not all chestnuts are edible; only sweet chestnuts are safe to eat. Wild chestnuts (horse chestnut) are toxic and cannot be eaten; they can be easily recognized by their appearance:
