Preparation – 10 minutes

Get your mortar and pestle and grind the caraway seeds and juniper, or skip this step if you already bought ground spices. Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves.

Combine minced meat, chopped garlic, ground spices, beef stock and baking soda with your hands. Season with pepper and salt and set aside.

You can cook them right away or wait a few hours so the flavours will enhance.

Cooking the Romanian grilled minced meat rolls – 10 minutes

Heat up your grill or barbecue. Meanwhile, use your hands to form the minced beef mixture into the desired shape. Coat with oil and grill on each side for about 2 to 3 minutes.

Serve with a simple tomato sauce if you like, but we think they're flavorful enough to eat them without sauce.

Even my Romanian mother bought preseasoned meat from one of the sellers at the city market to make these mititei/mici or cevapcici. It's all in the herbs and I've tried to replicate it at home but just haven't managed it yet. I think summer savoury is one of the ones they use at the market. :)

Have to be honest that I never had those before and I think these taste awesome. So I can't tell about those 'real' Romanian ones. But, my sister in law is from Romania, so I will definitely going to check with her (or her family)! :)

I grew up here in Canada with those mititei so I don't know what the 'real' Romanian version tastes like. I look forward to what you SIL says if you post her response. :)

He A_Boleyn! I asked my sister in law today and she said she's not familiair with anything pre-seasoned or herb mixes or anything like that for this mititei/mici. In Romania they all mix and make it from scratch like I did in this recipe and she said this recipe is correct :)
