You can use any type of sauerkraut, such as plain, wine sauerkraut, or herbed sauerkraut. Homemade sauerkraut, or fresh sauerkraut, is extra tasty because it's usually crunchier than store-bought sauerkraut. Whatever type of sauerkraut you choose, this fermented white cabbage is always tasty and healthy!

Do you think the idea of combining banana in a savory dish is a bit strange? Without banana, this sheet pie is still very tasty, but you can also replace the banana with pineapple.

Making the sheet pan pie with sauerkraut and minced meat – 45 minutes

Peel and finely chop the onion. Heat a splash of oil in a medium-sized skillet  and sauté the onion until it becomes translucent.

Add the minced meat and cook until browned. Season with pepper, salt, and 3 tablespoons of sweet soy sauce.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Drain the sauerkraut, making sure it's as dry as possible. Peel the bananas and slice them.

Place the sheet of puff pastry on the parchment paper. Mix 2 tablespoons of crème fraîche with half a tablespoon of mustard and spread this over the puff pastry, leaving a small edge free and folding the edges inward.

Spread the minced meat over the puff pastry, then the drained sauerkraut.

Place the banana slices on top and finish with a handful of grated cheese.

Bake the sheet pan pie until golden brown, about 20 to 30 minutes. The exact baking time depends on the oven and the thickness of the sheet pan pie. Enjoy your meal!

Which type of dough for a savory sheet pan pie?

For a savory sheet pan pie, puff pastry is the best choice. It's preferable to use a rectangular sheet, but you can also stick square pieces of puff pastry (from the freezer) together to form a rectangle. The best puff pastry is made with butter, but you can also use cheaper puff pastry made with oil.

In addition to puff pastry, you can also use dough especially for savory pies.

How long can you store a sheet pan pie?

Dishes made with puff pastry are best served immediately, as puff pastry will quickly become dry and taste stale. If you don’t mind that, you can store a sheet pan pie in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can reheat a sheet pan pie in the oven or an air fryer.
